FatCow Plan for $3.15/mo. only

What's in my home network? Servers and switches and fiber, OH MY!

Moving into a new house is always exciting… Especially when I get to plan out a new home network. Today, I update you on what’s in my home server rack, and what plans the future holds for it.

But first… What am I drinking???

Irresistible Amber Ale from Madison River Brewing Co (Montana). This is exactly what an Amber Ale should be… super malty, almost bordering on too sweet, but still very well balanced with a bit of a hoppy finish. Definitely on my recommended list.

  1. You either have good noise cancelling or very quiet servers. Either way, good job!

I would really like to see a comparison of Load times on games or applications using TrueNAS in iSCSI through the networt vs (SSD vs NVMe drive on a PC) I have played around with it a lot and am generally surprised that iSCSI handles so well on my low end hardware i am curious if your setup to help it out!

Nice switch at the end, can't it run pfsense as a vm? How practical is it? Regards Shane from Trinidad

Oooo mixed ssd and hdd in a pool? A video is warranted. Can't wait for the video.

SB8200A's have terrible peregrine firmware, packet loss is unreal after ~6.5-7days. awful. Looks like it's running D3.0, but hard to tell with the contrast…

Don't clean the dust off the base boards before filming them. That is the guy I would take advice from

  15. I think what needs covering is an alternative to big rack home servers, Such as HP/Dell/NUC/Lenovo/Fujtisu Tiny formfactor pc's as EXSI hosts,
With comparissons of the different generations of intel cpu's machines with ddr3/4 , space for m.2,msata, sata interfaces for the host system. and having different speed storage for different vm's.

Would personally love to see that!

  16. Really interesting. I currently have 300mm deep rackmount and I'm searching everywhere for a server/Nas built for it. It would be ideal for my home networking needs. But where do I start? (and why isn't there more options in that segment? Nobody wants big servers in their houses.)

Hi Jeff. Starting watching your channel about 6-8 months ago. First time posting. Really enjoy your content and looking forward to your upcoming stuff.

Have the same Rosewill chassis. No sliding rails? Do you find it difficult to slide it in and out yourself?

I really want to know the justification for servers like this. Is it purely just for fun and entertainment or is there a genuine need for this calibre in a home?

  21. Anyone still crypto mining? Some hardcore hardware in this space would be cool to see!

I would suggest you make that 24 Bay server a SAN machine and then use all of your storage needs. You could just run FreeNAS as a VM on your Proxmox host and either use FC or 10 gb iScsiFCoEetc between the SAN and your Proxmox host. This would eliminate the need to run 3 machine with just 2 machines, and also allow you to address any future storage needs for all your vms.

  23. If I put a rack in my garage, I'd have to clean it weekly.

  24. How are you going to be installing TrueNAS? Bare metal or in a VM? I remember you did a Proxmox box and installed FreeNAS on Proxmox. I'm just curious how that works out.
